Finding out you're pregnant is an exhilarating moment, filled with joy, anticipation, and a whole lotta of questions.

Not sure where to start with your birth plan? Whether it’s your first birth or your fourth, a birth plan helps you clarify your preferences and communicate them clearly to your birth team. At a birth center, it also becomes a powerful tool to guide your experience with intention and confidence.

What Is a Birth Plan?

A birth plan isn’t a rigid checklist. Which is why we like to call it Birth Goals!  It’s a conversation starter and a confidence builder. It outlines what matters most to you during labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period, so your care team can support you accordingly.

What Makes Birth Goals at a Birth Center Unique?

Because birth centers support physiological birth and low-intervention care, your goals and preferences  are more focused on environment, comfort, and communication. While hospitals may focus on managing procedures, birth centers prioritize the experience of birth itself.

Here are some elements to consider:

  • Who you want in the room (partner, doula, photographer)

  • How you want to move during labor (freedom to walk, sway, get in the tub)

  • Comfort measures you prefer (massage, hydrotherapy, music, dim lighting)

  • Pushing positions you’d like to try (hands and knees, squatting, side-lying)

  • Immediate postpartum requests - Is there anything that you would like to request that are not already standard of practice at the birth center?

  • Breastfeeding preferences

  • What you’d want in case of a transfer
