Considering a birth center? 3 questions to ask yourself.

Not sure where to give birth? If you're exploring alternatives to hospital birth, a birth center might be the perfect option for your family. Here are three questions to ask yourself when considering a birth center.

  1. What Are My Personal Health Considerations?

Evaluate your own health status and any specific medical needs that may influence your decision about birth location. If you have a low-risk pregnancy and prefer minimal medical interventions, birth centers are an excellent option!

However, if you have preexisting medical conditions or anticipate complications, a hospital setting with obstetricians and specialized medical equipment may provide the safest environment for you and your baby.

  2. What Level of Autonomy and Control Do I Desire During Labor and Birth?

Reflect on your preferences for decision-making autonomy and control during labor and birth. In a hospital setting, medical protocols and policies may dictate aspects of your birthing experience, such as fetal monitoring, labor induction, and interventions like epidurals or cesarean sections.

Alternatively, birthing centers allow the parents to make informed choices about their care, including the freedom to move, eat and drink, choose their preferred birthing positions, and birthing environment like a waterbirth.

  3. What Level of Support Do I Desire?

Consider the level of support you desire during labor and birth, both from your healthcare providers and your chosen birth companions. Hospital births typically offer access to a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including obstetricians, nurses, and anesthesiologists.

Birth centers prioritize personalized, compassionate, one-on-one care from midwives or doulas. They are engaged in your journey and offer education as well as support through the entire process (think prenatal and postpartum) rather than just the birth itself.

Where you give birth is a big deal. Birth centers overall offer more compassion, support, and choices for couples than hospitals. So if you’re considering an alternative to a hospital birth, answering these questions will ensure your setting aligns with your values, preferences, and healthcare needs.
